So, What Exactly is Sin?

Sin

The word itself means, “to miss the mark”. It’s an archery term.

Read our earlier post, “ Missing the Mark”

Many folks will say that they don’t sin since they don’t break the ten commandments. They don’t steal, they haven’t killed anyone, etc. But what you have to ask yourself, is how are you doing when it comes to commandment number one?

You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:3

And to what Jesus says was the greatest commandment to follow?

Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law? Jesus declared, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest commandment.” Matthew 22: 36-38

God’s word also says in Romans 3:23,

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”

So, before we even get started talking about sin, we need to realize that according to God we already have sin counted toward us. Why? Well, let me ask you, do you love God with all your heart, soul and mind? Always? I know I sure haven’t and I think the only one who has is Jesus Christ.

Additionally, do you hold anything with more value than God? Look at the following thoughts.

-You stay up until midnight to watch the game but hardly spend 5 minutes praying before

bed because your too tired.

-Refuse to get up early to spend time with God, but you get up at 5am to play golf.

-You sense the Holy Spirit telling you no, but you choose to say yes.

The apostle Paul says in Romans 7 that he knows the way that he should go, but he just doesn’t do it. He goes on to ask, what hope do I have and who can save a guy like me?

He immediately answers himself by giving thanks to God for Jesus Christ.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
